After an epic week of cutting, sewing and stitching I have our set of felt Jesse Tree ornaments complete – and 3 extra sets for market next week too.
Before I launch into more photos, here is a little overview of the Jesse Tree concept:
The Jesse Tree represents the family tree, or genealogy of Jesus Christ. It tells the story of God’s salvation plan, beginning with creation and continuing through the Old Testament, to the coming of the Messiah. The name comes from Isaiah 11:1, “Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.” (NASB) SOURCE
Starting on the 1st of December, a bible passage (or story depending on the children’s ages) is read each day that follows the lead up to Christmas, and then the corresponding ornament is added the ‘Jesse Tree’. This tree can be a branch, Christmas Tree or anything else you like. I’ll be off foraging for a nice branch on the weekend (our decorative sticks in a vase didn’t quite cut it!).
I was inspired by the ornaments I found here which popped up in my Pinterest feed a few weeks ago. However, I already had the texts/stories from a few years ago and I wanted to stick with them, so my ornaments are slightly different.
I used a combination of machine sewing and hand stitching/embroidery – most of the ornaments feature both. The reverse side is a plain coloured felt.
